Don’t Let The Internet Brainwash You

There’s a lot to digest in todays world of endless digital media. No wonder, Alan Watts, if I recall correctly, came up with this concept of the age of anxiety.

Modern tech has it’s benefits and internet can be fun, but we must remember a few things. The internet is full of politics and stuff like that which can really mess with you since you’re being constantly bombarded with negative news. It’s the same reason why many people choose not to engage in news media at all, because it can cause you enormous stress.

We all must be very, very cautious about the information we consume. It’s like a diet that we put ourselves into. Social media has been proven, even by science, to lower the self-esteem of people and cause enormous amounts of stress, mostly due to the politics and perhaps many more things around that.

The Age of Anxiety

I remember reading a study of people, comparing the people of 1950s to people of 2010s. The study said that modern people experience something like three times the amount of stress that did people in 1950. No wonder statistics on mental illness are going up, despite our technology becoming more sophisticated.

The internet is not 100% a thing that’s always conducive to wellbeing. No wonder it’s called doomscrolling. I personally don’t read any news media because I really want to be mindful these days and the internet has a lot of unnecessary drama, conflict and negativity going around.

So we’re living in the age of anxiety and our mental health seems to get worse and to be honest, I’ve put the two things together that this has to do with the internet and modern culture.

What To Do Instead

So all I am saying is that social media can cause anxiety and lower ones self-esteem. It can also consume a lot of time and suck in so many ways.

Literally someone said that the industrialized world already is correlated with anxiety. Now, mash that up with social media, photo editing and internet politics and we have a recipe for disaster, to be honest.

For me, I want to take time off the internet now, since I’ve reminded myself now to focus on other stuff rather than the internet all the time. It takes some time and it feels weird to go offline and explore life outside the digital.

So yeah. Just my 2 cents, hope this was helpful, and remember to take time off the internet and go offline for a while. For me it makes me believe in goodness again, because I’m not constantly being bombarded by media which is always not healthy. If you want to hear more about this, let me know via the comments or email.

See you later!
