I actually studied in school to be in sales. It was one of my dream jobs to be in sales, it sounded interesting since I realized it's just talking for a living. Back when I was a kid and teenager, I was congratulated and celebrated as someone who had a gift for speaking. So I thought I'd make that my job. Another one of my dream jobs was a talk show host.So it was funny. I always enjoyed good conversations and I thought if I can make money by only talking, that sounds like a dream come true. So I worked in sales and studied it in school. I loved to be interested in how the mind works and all kinds of studies on psychology and all that good stuff.
Okay, allright, but if you think of it, being a writer, at least if you think of it in Finnish, sounds like the most nerdy job out there. It's called in Finnish, a "Kirjailija" and it sound like only the most massive nerds would ever be interested in it.
That's just hilarious. I am pretty sure sales bro's are considered a lot more sexy than writers are. It just sound so, so super geeky to be a writer.
Pretty funny, huh. Well, let's not mind that, shall we. But if you think of it, writers are just in the business of selling pieces of language they constructed. So why are writers not as sexy as salespeople?
I am calling it out. Writers are just as cool as sales bros and sisters. Funny enough, and you better agree with me.
But anyway. Pretty funny like I said, producing language is actually cool to do for a living, at least it was for my teenager self, and I have my book out now. He should be proud of me. And I still am proud of being a writer, god damn it. So yeah, as does the salesperson talk for a living, so does the writer. And that is really awesome, to dive into the meta of your job. Or my job. Or whoever wants to writer, god damn it.
You must pick a field such as writing and then you just must do the thing repeatedly. There are no shortcuts, or any more secrets one should be aware of. Some writers do get rich, actually many have gotten rich in that field. Only follow a simple process and you will get rich eventually, I am absolutely certain of it. For example a musician gets rich by producing great music. A writer gets rich by producing great writing. Still how to get rich is a question that people ask and wonder about, and that is something baffling to me. It's really the most simple thing. You can do a little bit of math to help you out, for example if you write to one thousand paying clients, how much are you making? You'll be making something, and that is really the most important, that you make just a little bit. Anything else than making just a little bit goes into the territory of looking for shortcuts.
So don't look for shortcuts, but follow a creative process, be it writing every day, producing something else, if you prefer, or anything like that. You don't really need anything else than that. Imagine if you were producing a magnificent work of writing every month? It's pretty easy to get subscribers at that point, if your work is really good. Good work takes time, that is the most essential piece of knowledge that you need. You don't need some sort of magic tricks at all. You just need to write for your customers, and in today's world, there are thousands upon thousands of people who would be readers of yours. You know those people with 10k+ followers in social media? That's you, if you give your craft time. People will be interested when they hear from you. I actually tested out selling my book and when people are treated personally as a client, the rate of you closing your product is pretty high. If you still haven't sold 100 copies yet, worry not, the time will come when that will happen.
If you haven't sold 100 copies yet, you haven't asked enough. I would bet that 10% of people are interested in your creative product. In a world of 8 billion people, that means hundreds of millions of potential clients. If you yet haven't reached those people, worry not. You are not in a rush as a creative professional. Creating incredible art takes a long time, that's in the very nature of the thing you're trying to accomplish. You will get rich, do not worry if you are not yet, you will, I am absolutely certain of it. Getting rich is a simple science of shipping creativity - which comes down to creating it, the easiest path is doing a little bit of work every day. One can also experiment with sometimes doing longer sprints in one day.
As an extra piece of advice, learn new skills and become interested in learning, if you're looking to create affluence and wealth. The more you learn, the more you earn. If I only knew how to write something like The Bhagavad Gita or be the best computer programmer out there, I would be rich. If I only had the skills, I could do it.
That one is a trick question, because learning how to write The Bhagavad Gita or play Bach on the piano only takes effort combined with time. Nothing else is necessary in learning new skills. It's very easy, and I am sure you already are aware of that, also. If I could write the most beautiful poetry in the world, or write the best music, or create the nicest sculptures, I would automatically generate a lot of sales because my assets which I own and am able to monetize are so awesome that paying a few bucks for them is a no-brainer.
So that's it folks. How to get rich and the coolness of being a writer, all in one post. Thanks for reading and stay tuned.
Stay in the shadows...
